Call Of Duty: Call of Duty 4: Weapons & Tweaks

By: Phill Palmer - Published October 12, 2007 at 12:09 PM EDT - Writer Archive
Gotfrag's Phill Palmer and Sam Peoples take a look at the CoD4 single player demo and give a review on the weapons and several tweaks to improve the clearness and sharpness of the game.

After a brief scan through the demo I decided to input some of the commands that we use in CoD2 into the CoD4 demo to see any changes they make. These commands include Lodscale, Drawdecals, Polygonoffsetbias and Fog. Jon 'raz' Baker has now added a series of other commands to improve the graphics for competition. Cheats need to be enabled for some of the commands to work.

To make these commands work follow these simple steps:

  • Add +sv_cheats 1 to the target in the shortcut, for example "C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare Demo\iw3sp.exe" +seta sv_cheats 1.
  • Then type \seta thereisacow 1337 into the console when the game loads
  • Finally instead of clicking play game type \spdevmap bogs_a-7 then hit enter. This will enable fog to be turned off and enable other tweaks.

Make sure you have cheats enabled before you use to config or the game will overwrite the commands.

All these commands have been inputted into Jon's config that is available HERE. The file path will be something like C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare Demo\players\profiles\palmz. Just replace your cfg with this, while it does make the images clearer and removes some of the dust and fog particles it still needs some work done like PAM did in CoD2. But on the whole it looks a lot better than playing mp_Matmata did at the start of CoD2.

There has been a lot of criticism surrounding the demo and this is mainly aimed at the recoil. The main thing to take into account is that it is only a single player demo, go play CoD2 single player and look at the differences. Also there is more recoil in CoD4 on the whole compared to CoD2 and with IW saying there will be differences between multiplayer and single player combined with the people who have tried the multiplayer beta, left wondering where the recoil has gone the only thing we will have to do is wait and see.

To demonstrate the current state of weapons Sam ‘corp’ Peoples has done a weapon review, please click the thumbnails to see the recoil of each weapon.

M4A1 + M4A1 Grenadier

The recoil is evident but minimal and with a small amount of effort, can be easily controlled. It has a new style of iron sighting, with a red dot in the middle of the screen rather than the standard iron sighting seen on the AK47. It has a fast shot speed with its 30 magazine capacity finishing in 2.5 seconds and a player can move relatively fast whilst holding the weapon, but it does seem a lot less 'controlled' whilst not in iron sight, especially in comparison with the accuracy of an un-iron sighted MP44 in COD2. The grenadier part of the weapon is awesome for a single player, but it would not suit competitive play.

Positives

-Large overall capacity

Negatives

-Little to no recoil
-Red dot method of aiming
-Fires grenades (M4A1 Grenadier)

Overall

6/10
