Call Of Duty: "I'm as motivated as ever" - Martin "mint" Röjder

By: Liam Crowley - Published January 13, 2008 at 11:53 PM EST - Writer Archive
Martin "mint" Röjder sits down with GotFrag's Liam Crowley for a candid discussion of the Swedish star's recent breakup with EYEBALLERS and the future of his team.

A Swedish legend with WHO Crew, a EuroCup champion with both Check-Six and Dignitas and now the latest player to leave the sinking ship that is EYEBALLERS, Martin "mint" Röjder has perhaps had more than his fair share of both ups and downs over his last four years in gaming.

Now aged 25 and living in the Swedish city of Karlstad, "mint" remains as determined as ever, despite his team's latest setback. Having split from EYE, Röjder and his team are left in limbo ahead of the $10,000 Crossfire Devotii Challenge LAN event.

- Our plan now is just to get to CDC4 and show that we are the best team in the game so far. We will be bootcamping in Denmark in February and if we make it to CDC4, we will be prepared. We are going to aim for first place but we will be satisfied with a top three placement as long as we feel we play to our ability.

Röjder and his team had set the Call of Duty scene alight in recent weeks, storming to victory in the Crossfire Qcup without dropping a map and earning the title of favorites for CDC4. Now, however, their future is left in jeopardy.

- There were some problems with the CS 1.6 team even when we joined but as time has passed by, the sponsors that were picked up with the CS team in mind have been impossible to work with and so EYE has dropped them. This has resulted in EYE having no money, the CS team has, as a lot of people know, left the organisation and recently we have come to understand that there is absolutely no funding left. We feel we've come to a point where we can no longer sit and watch as our LAN plans and projects are ruined for us.

The search for a new home

The team formerly known as Fukyuu are now left with just over six weeks to secure funding for an event that was once considered their's for the taking.

- Right now we have been focusing on our game, which has been the only thing that has really worked out for us so far. With no financial backing behind us we have decided to pay the CDC4 entrance fee out of our own pockets and hope we will find something in the meantime. Unfortunately it seems it doesn't matter if you are the best team available at any given moment in this game unless you have the right contacts.

With everything to play for, the team remain hopeful but Röjder admits it has been a heavy blow.

- We are a bit off our normal form at the moment because our future is uncertain, but we are as determined as ever to get it right because we want to keep playing at the top in this game and I have faith in our ability. We have moments where our team morale is lower than what we would like but we always find the problems and we always work them out, I think that's something we are really good at.

A history of success
Mint in action for Dignitas

Röjder is certainly no stranger when it comes to facing down adversity. The Swedish player's past triumphs include some of the most amazing comebacks and upsets the Call of Duty series has ever seen. Tek-9, TmG and H2k must still have nightmares of "mint" and "kickR" leading WHO Crew back from the brink at the Playz LAN and who could forget Röjder's incredible victories over Speedlink and Dignitas as he secured the EuroCup XIII title for Check-Six live on Danish television in Aarhus.

- I bring experience to the team, especially from big tournaments. I'm also the strat caller and team captain so in a way I'm the leader of the team but I'm not in any way the dictator. I'm not shy to tell someone off though and tend to do that when we are not performing as usual.

After the break-up of Check-Six, Röjder enjoyed spells with European heavyweights Serious-Gaming and Dignitas. Another EuroCup trophy followed but the former WHO Crew star never really settled with his new foreign teammates.
