Hey, I love the eerie and digital sound he creates. Just remember that Lua belongs on Digital Ash rather than Wide Awake. Seriously though, Take it Easy (Love Nothing) might be one of the greatest songs of all time. And the opener to Gold Mine Gutted? Come on.
Used to listen to him a lot, but I've always preferred Ryan Adams & Elliott Smith much more (both instrumentally & at song writing). As someone who's been playing music for a long time, they just impress me much more.
Ryan Adams has more country in his sound whereas Oberst takes a folk, or sometimes digital, sound. I think I'd disagree about Smith having better instrumental though...I think Conor uses a far wider range of instruments than Smith ever did, though it's obviously a subjective matter as to what makes one instrumental better than another. Same applies to Adams - he comes off as a more American country/rock-inspired artist. Again, my opinion on this, but I think Oberst takes more risks in his sound and aims to be innovative, whereas Smith and Adams more or less fine tune (or tuned, in Smith's case, RIP :[) their already established sound.
Doesn't matter as all of them are easily in my top 10, maybe top 5 of all time.
